2/14/2012 Something Borrowed

I am addicted to all things “Once Upon A Time” (ABC, Sundays @ 7:00 central) so of course I have to watch Ginnifer Goodwin (Snow White/Mary Margaret) in Something Borrowed. Also Jim from “The Office” is in it, so why have I not watched this before? Basically, because I read the first chapter one time at the fireworks stand and the whole sleeping with your best friend’s fiance was a turn off. But now my love of “Once” is over powering that.

Jist of things: Rachel and Darcy are best friends. Rachel introduces Darcy to Dex and even though she has feelings for Dex, she lets Darcy go out with Dex. Flash forward six years and Darcy and Dex are engaged and Rachel is old, like 30. At her birthday party, she tells Dex that she always liked him and then they have sex because it turns out he liked her too.

I didn’t like this movie. Too much drama and people who secretly love other people but don’t say anything. Also, I’m very midwestern and the New Yorkers spending every weekend in the Hamptons was a difficult concept for me to grasp. Also, good things shouldn’t happen to people who do bad things, it’s just not right.

My favorite part was when Darcy and Rachel do their dance routine to “Push It” and the “spill your secrets” version of badminton. John Krasinski as Ethan was the good part of this movie. Not my favorite part (but it made me think of Michelle Kwan so an interesting part) Rachel and Darcy were having a dance off and Rachel was showing Dex just how bad it feels to watch the one you love grind with another and she pulls a muscle, namely her groin, which is the injury that kept Kwan out of the Torino games in 2006. (Huge Michelle Kwan fan here.)

EDIT: I can’t believe I forgot my other favorite part (I remembered because Erin and I watched it again on Friday night.) After a poignant scene, “Poison and Wine” by The Civil Wars starts playing and it just fits perfectly. The lyrics are ” I don’t love you, but I always will,” which fits the saga of Rachel and Dex. Also it’s a beautiful song.

So I’d say future children might not get to watch this until they’re out of the house, lots of sex and lies, so 18. As a new Ginnifer Goodwin fan, I was disappointed and can only say that I hope the book was better D.
